Week one - what I learned

by Joe Doyle on May 25, 2007

When the babies were born I thought “what the heck am I gonna do with the blog?” Well, my passions have shifted a bit, but this blog will continue with musings about our new kids, cycling, advertising, Bears, Sox and all things cool.

Here are a few things I learned this week as a new Dad.

- Sleep is over-rated. Seriously, I’d rather be a zombie than not have Katie and Pat
- Babies sleep. A lot.
- Grandparents are the key to a successful first week post-birth. No doubt in my mind.
- Unconditional love happens the very second your child (children) are born.
- You start to worry about the future - college, schools… they aren’t even out of diapers yet.
- You imagine them racing their bikes, or kicking a soccer ball in the yard (or at least I do).

I know there’s more, but time is a premium these days and I’d rather share images.

Katie likes to put things in her mouth
when she’s hungry (which is all the time):

visit to Dr. Dawson:

A sincere and heartfelt thanks to all our friends and family who’ve called us, emailed us, sent gifts, well wishes, cards, love, linked us on their blog… it’s truly amazing and you all are very kind souls.

What’s in a name!
After spending the first week with the new bourns,
the co-grandparents, Karen & Corky and Jean & Bob had the fun of changing diapers, some feedings, holding and getting to know Katherine and Patrick’s personalities.
Now some might say all they do is eat, sleep and poop and that may be true however in-between we started to see the differences in their features and movements.
Katherine Bing(Katie) rightly named because she is active, holds her head up high, kicks her feet and lets
you know when she wants something. She is beautiful and
loves lying on your chest to sleep. There is no doubt with the Bing in her name she is like her Mom and Grandpa Bing.
Patrick James(P.J.) is more laid back. You know he was on top of Katie through much of the pregnancy and she learned to fight for herself and he just laid there.
He is easy going and once he has eaten he quickly falls a sleep (just like his name sake Grandpa Jim).
Patrick will let you hold him for hours and every now and then the throws you a smile (it just melts your heart). He has long legs, hands and a long neck and we think he will be a good bike rider with his Dad.
We love the names Joe and Stacey chose for the babies and have found they fit them very well.
Now as for being Grandparents, there is nothing like it in the whole world especially when you are lucky enough to have two beautiful, healthy babies who have parents who are so attentive, and easy going. They will do great helping the babies become confident, caring and healthy individuals.
We enjoyed our time in Austin getting to know Karen & Corky better and loved that Joe and Stacey let us be a part of this new chapter in their lives. It’s not easy with twins but we are certain that these two can and that they have done a great job in the first 10 days.
Can’t wait for all of you to met the new twins, Katie and Patrick.

Thanks you two. We so enjoyed the full-on family experience.

And you’re right - it’s more than bodily functions. I mean, after all, we wouldn’t be calling Patrick the “Turtle” if he didn’t have such a long neck that he likes to extend like a turtle coming out of his shell.
