10 years ago I married my love, Stacey Renee.
The day was gorgeous – 70′s and sunny. We took over Logan Square and made it our own, using homes and St. John Berchmans to facilitate our nuptials. Hundreds gathered from around the country to celebrate our union, and we partied on the Near North Side well into the night.

10 years ago we started a journey.
On that day the world became our oyster. We had no idea where we we heading – there was no Texas in our plans, and the idea of twins wasn’t even a possibility. We built a foundation of friendship between us, and opened that to others.

10 years is a long time.
Feels like an eternity… (isn’t that the joke?) To be honest, 10 years have flown by. It seems like that wonderful Fall day was just a couple of years ago. That’s part of what makes 10 years so special.

10 years is a start.
Every day brings us back to day one, to a place where we created a life together. Every day brings us back to our wedding song, Teach Me About Love, because we can never stop learning about each other.

Stacey, I love you. Thank you for 10 great years.

Spare a sawbuck for the LAF?

Here we are on Cinbco de Mayo and I’m already behind in my fund-raising goals for LIVESTRONG (the Lance Armstrong Foundation). Doyle fashion? To be sure.

But it’s also in my repertoire to occasionally raise money and donate funds to a worthy cause. It’s been awhile, but this spring I feel compelled to raise at least $250 for LIVESTRONG. And you can help me get reach my goal with a simple $10 donation.

It’s a much smaller ambition that I had in 2001 and 2002 when I raised over $10,000 a year with Ole Mike Cacciabondo. The yearly reward for our hard work (as Peloton Project members) was a long weekend in Austin. We got to ride with Lance and connect with this amazing city. Now that I live here, I’ve come to see firsthand just how valuable the LAF is to our town, and even more so to the cancer community.

People affected by cancer visit the LIVESTRONG websites every day. Heck, every minute. It’s the first step for many, and a true inspiration to anyone who’s on the journey to recovery. Since I’ve become the Interactive Director at HC&B Healthcare, I’ve had the opportunity to work with two huge oncology organizations, and everyone in the field knows the prowess of the LAF. They are on the forefront of the cancer movement – helping many with information, resources and even funding cancer research.

In years past I would ride in honor of people I knew who were affected by the disease. But this year I plan to race in the Mellow Johnny’s Classic – a UCI Pro Mountain Bike Race that happens on Juan Pelota‘s ranch. I’ll draw inspiration on the trail from all the people I know who’ve beaten cancer – there are so many of you.

At two the kids head in for another doctor’s visit for the usual inspection and a coupla shots (next wellness visit isn’t until three – hooray!). Katie and PJ did well until the needles came out, then the room filled with blood-curdling murder screams. Patrick was very sad by it all, but Katie seemed downright pissed. Kind of funny how they react differently.

Celtic Fest in Austin

Celtic doesn’t mean ALL Irish, it means a whole lot of that other North Highland stuff, so we pulled out our inner Grandma Doyle (nee McCafferty) and watched weird games of throw the giant telephone pole and toss some big hammer.

There was sheep herding, live music and sausage on a stick. Not to mention turkey legs, lemonade, beer and overpriced fish and chips.

Overall it was fun. We got to trailer the kids 17 miles round trip with our friends John, Cheryl and Hayden Lane. I enjoyed riding with them and discussing the neighborhoods, as one should from a bike.

But next year it’s the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Festival. Much more to see I think. And likely not as expensive for what you get.

Plus it’s cool if they want to use bats in their advertising, because it’s all about death and darkness. Not so much for a Celtic Fest: Bats + Celtic patterns = Really bad. Don’t believe me?

The DOYLES are headin’ north

Hey friends and family – we’re coming your way!

Many of you know about our planned vacation, but for those who are just finding out I apologize on the timing. We’ve been very busy and trying to schedule everything has been kind of nightmarish. Nothing more stressful than a vacation, right?

Here’s our plans, we hope to see as many of you as possible. Please know that you’re all invited to join us at any location at any time and we encourage it! It’s going to be hard for us to travel to everyone’s home with the toddlers, we hope you understand.

09.23 Tues – leave Austin, land at O’Hare, meet Grandma jean and Grandpa Bob to get their vehicle. They’re so nice and kind to travel six hours round trip to lend us transportation. [Thanks again.] After a quick lunch with them we’re headed to Galena, IL for the Goeres family reunion.

09.24 Weds – 09.26 Fri – Hanging out in the land of Ulysses S. Grant. Lots of family fun – games, shenanigans, possibly a mountain bike morning through The Prairie Peddler. Maybe an Alpine Slide for the kids.

09.26 Fri – Drive to South Bend, IN (Granger, really) to see our good friends, the Bells. Our kids will have much fun together, and Kelly has already offered up more than we’ll need. So nice.

09.27 Sat – Drive a little farther north to St Joseph, MI to see our good friends, the Finnigans. Even more kids craziness and reacquainting with old friends. Likely a good chimenea burn that night.

09.28 Sun – A few more miles up the beautiful west Michigan coast to Allegan, MI to see Grandma Jean, Grandpa Bob, Aunt Kelly and a lot of Ashley relatives. Mom’s hosting an open house to display the toddlers Doyle, just today I realized i get to see some family I haven’t seen for years. Very exciting.

09.29 Mon – After a visit to Aunt Kelly’s work, we’ll pop over to her new house in Kalamazoo. We’re looking forward to seeing the place and her friends!

09.30 Tues – 10.01 Weds – Back in Allegan, maybe a quick mountain bike ride for the kid at Yankee Springs or Fort Custer (where Stacey and I got engaged). Looking for a bike shop that has some demos, so we’ll see.

10.01 Weds – Drive to Chicago to see Grandpa Joe and Grandma Karen. We’re staying in a great condo just two blocks from Comiskey. GO SOX!

10.02 – Thurs - Stacey’s going to take some time and have a spa day at The Silken Tent, owned by our good friend Tiffany Cannon. Then it’s Doyle Day at the condo – all the cousins are coming by, you can, too. Any of these days feel free to visit.

10.03 – Fri – More Doyles in the morning, then a mountain bike ride at Palos with Paolo, Mike and Rachel. Night-time is wide open and dedicated to seeing friends. We’ll likely start out at Dugan’s in Greek Town. If you’d like to pop by the condo before to see the kids, please feel free.

10.04 – Sat – We leave at noon, but there’s always breakfast.
