Random thoughts and a new site

I’ve been getting emails about the weird things going on with my blog. Keep ‘em up, please – they all help as I re-design this thang.

As you can see (on the actual site, if you RSS), I’ve moved forward with the new theme I wrote about a couple weeks back. It’s called THESIS by DIYthemes, and so far I like it.

I’m getting help from this guy and even this guy, but my objective is to learn all about the code and get to a point where I’m writing it myself. So far, so good.

Next I plan to:
• change fonts to a san-serif
• add a background image border
• move the header and include a new design
• add social networking links, a portfolio page and fresh blogroll
• upgrade to the latest WordPress version

WEEK IN CHICAGO

Last Tuesday night I arrived in Chicago for a working session with new clients, a visit with family and friends, a Stalelife-sponsored White Sox event and games versus the Cubs.

I posted a bunch of new images on Flickr. They tell a quick story, but here are some impressions:

• The Garcia’s baby girl Cecilie is as cute as reported. Strong, too.

• Sadly, I missed seeing two other new friends, Rylan Soble, Matt and Amy’s boy, and Wil Salihar of the Warren and Lisa Salihars. Next time…

• You forget how much advertising there is on the streets of Chicago until you get back

• Great weather – I even wore a jacket one day.

• The Sox can beat NL teams, apparently just the last-place ones.

• Cubs fans are even more obnoxious after a twelve pack. Ugh – worst fans in baseball.

• Working with my partner Kurt is much easier in person.

• I missed my family every day, and that feeling got stronger the closer I got to home.

After this photo was taken, da coach allegedly beat down the unruly fan.

“He kept asking me to play catcher for the Cubs,” said Ditka.

“I asked him about that Soda guy. He’s good, right? Then he tried to compare playing catcher to tight end, and, well, that’s when we came to blows.”

“I think he might have wanted me, you know those Cubs fans,” said a perturbed Ditka.

What’s one thing you never do in sports?
If you said “count your chickens before they’re hatched”, you win a shiny nickel.

From a Tribune article today:

“We’re thinking about the World Series,” Cedeno said.

Wait, there’s more:

“We have everything this year, believe me,” Zambrano said. “We can go all the way to … where we want.”

Can you believe such a thing? The season is 162 games long (currently in week three), your team just got into first place, and your pedigree is the worst in the history of American sports leagues.

Plus there are so many variables – health, umpire’s calls, streaks, curses… Who (or what) is going to be the curse of ’08?

In case you missed it, the new Chubs statue has a typo.

Said one fan (almost happily), “That’s the Cubs for you.”

Does Schadenfreude extend to the fans themselves?

I mean, could it be that they actually want to lose year after year after year after year (x 100)? Or maybe it’s the paper that owns the Chubs that wants to extend Schadenfreude (by reporting the fan was almost happy)?

I personally hope this gets added to the list of curses. It’s worthy.

Every April my schadenfreude gets up, though I didn’t know it until last week (thanks, Mark).

And this year – with the north siders embarking on the joyously momentous milestone of 100 years without a WS win and owning the dubious title of team with the longest drought in the history of all American sport franchises – my scadenfreude is tingling.

Shadenfreude is the satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else’s misfortune. Like, if the Sox lose and the Cubs do, too, it’s OK because at least those jerks up north are pissed off. It’s a good day when the Cubs lose, better if the Sox win. That sort of thing.

But some people don’t get it – they want the fans to all get along. But why sit on the fence? I don’t ask Tampa Fans to root for the Marlins. Or Rangers fans to root for the Astros.

All I ask is that the Cubs lose, so maybe this guy will stop singing that stupid “hey hey holy mackarel” song into my voice mail.

Because he really doesn’t sing that well, and I hate that freakin’ song.

GO SOX!
