Ozzie is my homeboy.

by Joe Doyle on August 5, 2008

It’s hard to be a SOX fan right now. Tied for first with the Twinkees and, well, the good guys lack confidence and it really shows on the field.

Swagger?

Not so much.
They’ve even lost some fights - it seems AJ is always on the ass end of an ass beating and Sunday was no different.

Except one thing stood out. For once (or maybe this was the second or third time ever) – Ozzie was right to have a fit.

Usually he’s playing tough guy / player’s best friend and defending the millionaires on the most mundane of issues. A beat throw. A missed tag. But Sunday was nothing short of quality management.

In honor of his spirited show, I wore my misspelled Ozzy is My Homeboy t-shirt yesterday. Yes, I paid money knowing it was wrong. It was well worth $15 to have all these Texans stare for they have no idea of the greatness embedded in my cotton shirt.

Together we have hope. Not the “it’s gonna happen” type of hope, but hope that Ozzie’s tirade can turn around an aged, streaky team with nowhere near the domination seen in 2005.

Damnit, go you SOX!

GO already! Win… for Ozzie’s sake.

Welcome to Mayberry.

by Joe Doyle on July 18, 2008

Crestview, our Austin neighborhood, is very akin to Mayberry. I haven’t met Barney Fife yet, but there is a Floyd the Barber.

Our local IGA and pharmacy have been there in the middle of our neighborhood for eons. You’d never know the existed if you didn’t live in this part of town (they’re not located on a major street). We have a fabulous Little Deli, and a civic-minded neighborhood group that really watches out for the ‘hood.

Last weekend was an Ice Cream Social. We missed it in ‘07, but this year we braved the 100º heat to meet people and be social. There were plenty of kind old folk who were fun to talk with, and lots of new families. We met neighbors from down the block, and the kids enjoyed the band.

If you have time, check out our Flickr account for more images.

The next day was a social of our own. We had the Hills and Thompsons over for a kiddie pool date and some refreshments. Good times all around – it was nice to meet new old friends.

The kids love their new sand and water table. Thanks Grandpa Joe and Grandma Karen S.

Sawyer is a pretty cool dude and played well with the kids.

Have a nice weekend, friends.

An open letter to our favorite manager of all time, Mr. Ozzie Guillen.

by Joe Doyle on June 16, 2008

Dear Ozzie,

I’ve been a fan of yours since you were tagged out on first base with the old hidden ball trick. If memory serves me right, it happened to you again a week later.

Despite falling prey to such rookie high jinks, you’ve lead the Southside Hitmen to a World Series victory and several big wins over the dreaded northsiders.

Enter 2008, and both clubs are on top of the heap, with the boys in blue playing out of their heads. So I have some advice, Mr. Guillen:
look to the bench.

My favorite memories of our boys beating the Chubbies have nothing to do with AJ or Paulie and even Jermaine. I think of
Mike Caruso and Rob Mackowiak – two unassuming players on the fringe, who helped push the beloved Sox to glorious victory.

Speed is on your side against this club – their backstop has only caught 11 guys all year. So go for it. Put Paulie on the DL and get your Owens running, or have your Wise guy intimidate.

They’re hungry, and so are we.

GO SOX!
