Celtic Fest in Austin

by Joe Doyle on November 4, 2008

Celtic doesn’t mean ALL Irish, it means a whole lot of that other North Highland stuff, so we pulled out our inner Grandma Doyle (nee McCafferty) and watched weird games of throw the giant telephone pole and toss some big hammer.

There was sheep herding, live music and sausage on a stick. Not to mention turkey legs, lemonade, beer and overpriced fish and chips.

Overall it was fun. We got to trailer the kids 17 miles round trip with our friends John, Cheryl and Hayden Lane. I enjoyed riding with them and discussing the neighborhoods, as one should from a bike.

But next year it’s the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Festival. Much more to see I think. And likely not as expensive for what you get.

Plus it’s cool if they want to use bats in their advertising, because it’s all about death and darkness. Not so much for a Celtic Fest: Bats + Celtic patterns = Really bad. Don’t believe me?

Here’s a few quick images from the crappy iPhone camera. Halloween to come…

I rode my bike to coworking today.

by Joe Doyle on July 24, 2008

It’s true.

I rode it to Conjectured for a coworking session. What’s that you say? Coworking?

People from all walks of trade work together, at least in the same space. Ideas generate through conversation, people show videos of their latest project, others hole up and build the latest new business deck or talk about their new social media strategy for local gardeners.

It’s open and lovely, like some sort hippy-ness revisited. Open source for the non-programming (and programming) sect.

Well, we are in Austin – so it’s never a stretch on hippy-ness. But this idea is everywhere and even if you work in a standard setting, it’s nice to change things up.

The call for FREE co-working got me out on my bike, so dig that. I need to ride more, and this is precisely the type of thing to get me moving.

I hauled butt this morning on the Austin streets, like the guy on the cover below. It’s great to see bike commuting become part of the normal outlay for advertising.

Wednesday’s theme.

by Joe Doyle on July 23, 2008

Grandpa Bob – stop sending pictures, dangummit. You’re giving me unnecessary work over here.

Today’s theme includes a new venue and new clothes for the kids. Yes, we actually do dress them in other things.

Getting ready for our trip to the park with a little indoors play action.

Patchwork PJ is growing out of my favorite outfit for him. Need to find an equally suitable cute replacement.

Grandma Jean was awfully proud of this capture, and now you see why.

“If you’re going, I’m going, too.” Molly loves the slides.

Kids are great, but I’ll get back to more important things like bashing the Cubs and advertising anecdotes in a few. Then Grandpa Corky and Grandma Karen will be in town for their anniversary (45 years?), so I’m sure we’ll have more kiddo fun to post.

Have a great day!
