My boy Bill spends half his days on the side of a mountain in Denver, and (soon) the other half down here in Austin.
Last weekend he took these amazing nighttime images:

I have two questions:
1. Do you carry a gun?
2. How many bears did you see (and not the Urlacher variety)?
Bill started a blog, though he always made fun of the word. Will he Twitter next?

Answers: Do I carry a gun? I carry a big hunting knife on all my hikes alone in bear/cougar country. I usually don’t carry it when I’m riding my bike, but it depends — there are some areas where I know cougars live, where I’ve seen tracks and once actually saw a cat, so I will carry the knife if I’m going there, even on my bike.
2) Bears aren’t an issue at 13,000 feet this time of year. There’s too much snow, nothing for them to eat. There are fox running around up there, and a vanishingly slim chance of cougars. But most of the big critters are down low where there’s vegetation and prey. Another couple months and that will be a different story, but right now, I’m mainly going to run into pikas and ptarmigans. And hippies skiing naked in the moonlight.
