Mapping the baseball world.

by Joe Doyle on August 8, 2007

Old maps intrigue me. When I was little I recall a map of Chicago that ended at 95th street. “Why didn’t they finish it?”, I thought.

This map is pretty interesting, too. A friend sent it, after seeing it on the Chicagoist website.

Can you imagine how cool it was to assemble this data? What are those people called, people who build maps?

Personally, I think the Cubs territory should be nationwide. America’s team (thanks to cable and WGN). And I love to see that little section for the SOX. If you know a SOX fan, you know they’re happy not to be America’s team.

Are there really that many Pirates fans? Maybe in ‘79 with Willie Stargell and crew. But I don’t know…

Not a big baseball fan, but this is pretty cool. Take another look at the Pirates topography — remember, it’s still 1979 in Appalachia! (ha, ha) This would be really interesting to do for football — although I’m afraid the green and gold would swamp the entire nation …

I think mapmakers are called cartographers. That was the first word that came to mind when I read your post. There might be another term, too, that I can’t think of? I wonder if people who demographic research (which might help with this particular map) are called demographers?

And in the internet age, what would the word be for the Navteq people who drive around all day collecting info on new roads, new highway exits, etc, to make GPS maps for Garmin, maps for Mapquest, etc. Cartographer sounds too old school?

Maybe they have their own title, like Navteq-ographer.

That would be a cool job if you could do it from a saddle.

I think that would be a cool job no matter what! There are only two companies I have always wanted to work for in this city: SRAM and Navteq. Funny how I know people in both places! Lucky me!

Cartography rules. I just bought a map tonight. Funny.
