Curse ‘08

by Joe Doyle on April 22, 2008

What’s one thing you never do in sports?
If you said “count your chickens before they’re hatched”, you win a shiny nickel.

From a Tribune article today:

“We’re thinking about the World Series,” Cedeno said.

Wait, there’s more:

“We have everything this year, believe me,” Zambrano said. “We can go all the way to … where we want.”

Can you believe such a thing? The season is 162 games long (currently in week three), your team just got into first place, and your pedigree is the worst in the history of American sports leagues.

Plus there are so many variables – health, umpire’s calls, streaks, curses… Who (or what) is going to be the curse of ‘08?

As a sports fan in general, I always want my team’s players thinking they are going to the world series, super bowl, nba championship, chess championship, etc. This is not coming from a cubs fan, but if the players think they can get to the world series - good. I’d hate to hear my players saying “well, hopefully we’ll be .500 and then we’ll take it from there.” That’s just whimp talk.
By the way, curses ARE stupid and silly, but ever since you posted this the Sox have not won a game. Hmmmm……

AND there was a black cat on the field the other day….

Mark - I know they should be thinking about being the champs. Heck, it’s the only wa to win. But don’t talk about it with the media.

I believe Kenny Williams does the same thing. OK, maybe he says they will contend for a title, which is close enough. He even said that the Tigers picked up Cabrera so they could compete with the Sox. Yeah, so far the Tigers have had their struggles, but either way most sports figures are guilty of saying something dumb, overconfident, etc. to the media or anyone else who will listen. They’re ball players, not communications or PR specialists.

To all of Joe’s Cubs fans out there, Cedeno one grandy - bets on more? We have two black cats, does that offset the one black cat? It’s a long year, but you have to admit, it’s an improvement. Who do you like in the K Derby (that be horses)?
