Runnin'

27:55, 3 cubic yards and 11 runs

by Joe Doyle on April 14, 2008

BUN RUN:
Yesterday was the third race in the Spring Series and I pulled a 27:55. I know for a fact that I would have been faster, but I decided last minute to bring my sometimes running partner, Molly.

Mile 1 she was off the front
Mile 2 she was even with me, but getting distracted
Mile 3 she was lagging hard – no final 3-block kick for me

She likes to run and has been on the trail for 40 minutes before. Maybe it was the hills and all the people. Poor little dog. The whole family came in support and it was a fun adventure. We were all disappointed to learn there were no Schlotzsky’s sammichs at their event.

COMPOSTIN’
Sunday afternoon brought the spreadin’ of manure and compost…three cubic yards of it. That’s a lot of shit to shovel (and still some left). When Mom visits in a couple weeks she’s gonna help me plant a bed (unbeknownst to her).

TWO GRANNIES
Yesterday wasn’t all work. I got to watch the SOX score 11 runs. It made me reminisce about the 2005 world series and Paulie’s Grand Salami in game two. GO SOX! Big series with the A’s coming up.

At the re-built Comiskey, SOX management left in the old seats where Scott Podsednik’s homer and Paulies Grand Slam (above) landed.

I bleed from my nipple

by Joe Doyle on March 31, 2008

Aren’t you glad you got to see that?

Wet wicking fabric and my manly nipples don’t jive. But at least I didn’t notice until the race was over.

The Cap10K on Sunday was met with 100% rain for 100% of the race. It didn’t fall from the sky until we were all forced into the start pen, which meant at least the warm up and stretching was dry.
why I love CX so much. But I missed my :55 goal and tweaked my knee by running on the downside of the sloped road for too long. 1:00:56 for the day isn’t horrible. I enjoy the big races - plenty of good tunes to hear and the Cap10K brings out some interesting costumes. I started next to this “nun”, she had a full habit at one point.

This was the second of my Sprint Series races, three to go! The family will be at the next one, seeing as it’s sponsored by Schlotzskys.

Peace.

Catchin’ up from SXSW

by Joe Doyle on March 20, 2008

Still a week over and I’m catching up on work, chores and hopefully getting a ride and run in here and there. My work partner, Kurt, was in town for ten days. He even proposed to his girlfriend atop Mt Bonnell. It was great to be part of the celebration.

Today the kids are posing for professional photos at the house. I’m excited for that.

Saturday I ran the Daisy 5K, which is the start of the Sprint Race Series. For some reason I was slower on this flat course than my previous experience on a hilly one. Weird. But I paced with a guy for 1.5 miles and out-kicked him with 25m to go.

Next up is the Statesman Cap 10K. It’s a huge race, well supported. I’m looking forward to it. I hope to come in under :55.

The great thing about SXSW is the new music that I got to enjoy. Off the top of my head I’d say my new favs are:
Black Joe Louis (local band) - loves me some horns
Sons and daughters
Catfish Haven
Born Ruffians
Ra ra riot - I’m a sucka for strings.

But there are so many acts I missed, and so many that would have been better in other venues. Like Project Jenny, Project Jan. Two guys: One emcee. One DJ. They payed out at the Spider House in late afternoon. This show woulda been great at night.

Mohawk is quickly becoming my favorite music club in town – I like the variety of places to relax and see music. But Emos and Stubbs are cool, too. Going to see Wilco at the latter on May 11th.

Last, I leave you with this – by far the coolest illustration I’ve found in assembling all those kids toys.

Thurs. – D-town

by Joe Doyle on March 1, 2008

Met Mike Cacciabondo in Dallas for the Stars v Blackhawks game. Matt Soble, of the Austin (soon-to-be Chicago) Sobles, was present and Charlie Begue joined us in his home town.

Chas took us to a fine tavern post Stars victory. They kicked the crap out of the Hawks, they of swiss-cheese-like defense.

Ug-o-ly.

We’re off to this 5K. Cacciabondo says he’s gonna beat me by five minutes.

That’s why I beat him 11-8 in hoops this morning.

This is for sale, right on the highway…

So much talent, so little execution.
